This series of self-portraits was taken by Brianna Byrne shortly after she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Exploring issues of identity and the interruptive nature of illness, White Out’s images depict subtle changes in attitude throughout the photographer’s journey as she lives with newfound uncertainty, and a shifting, often confusing sense of time and space. Photography provides an outlet for Byrne: momentarily, she is in control as she triggers the shutter on each moving portrait.
